Day Summary for Fresh Check: A Comprehensive Review

On Tuesday, October 2nd, Holy Cross hosted Fresh Check Day, a national event aimed at promoting mental health and reducing stigma. The event took place from 12 pm to 3 pm at Hoval, and around 300 people attended.

Fresh Check Day is a significant annual campus event that originated in 2012 as a suicide prevention initiative by college counseling centers. It is now recognized in the mental health community for its engaging activities and interactive booths designed to create a supportive environment for discussing mental health openly.

The event featured booths promoting mental health topics such as depression, anxiety, and stress. A specific booth called the "9/10" booth focused on suicide prevention. The Jordan Porco Foundation, a relevant organization with a mission to prevent suicide, promote mental health, and create a message of hope for young adults, was instrumental in the creation and execution of Fresh Check Day.

The day was filled with activities designed to educate, engage, and support students. There were prizes and treats available throughout the event, such as snacks, pickleball packs, and new headphones. Staff members of CAPS (Counseling & Psychological Services) and club members of COPE (Counseling Outreach Peer Educators) were present, providing resources and support.

COPE, in particular, led Fresh Check Day with the aim of spreading mental health awareness among students. They will also host a mental health check-in for students during the event. The event aligns with national mental health advocacy movements focused on education, support, and stigma reduction, similar to organizations like NAMI[2].

Many colleges and universities participate in Fresh Check Day, including the University of Rhode Island, Fairfield University, University of Iowa, and Worcester State University. Fresh Check Day at Holy Cross was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about mental health resources, recognize warning signs of distress in themselves and others, and foster peer-to-peer support. It is a testament to the university's commitment to promoting mental wellness and creating a supportive environment for its students.
