Court hands down verdict to mother who tossed baby in cold weather

In the courts of Sverdlovsk region, Alena Dobrynina was found guilty of attempted murder of a newborn. The maximum penalty for this charge is a five-year prison term.

Early in the morning of March 4, Dobrynina abandoned a baby wrapped in a blanket near a bench outside a house in Niжniy Tаgil. A passerby noticed the live infant, took him inside for warmth, and called for emergency services.

The investigation revealed that Dobrynina gave birth at home and had no intention of raising the child. She was previously deprived of parental rights. She has six other children.

Dobrynina has been in court twice: in 2016, for causing death by negligence; and in 2019, for murder. She was released from prison in 2022.

In a separate case, a court in Yekaterinburg released a woman who gave birth without medical assistance, placed the baby in a trash bag, and threw him out of a window into a pile of snow. The woman's freedom was limited for two years.

As Dobrynina has recently been released from prison after serving time for prior offenses related to family health and parenting (in 2016 for causing death by negligence and in 2019 for murder), news outlets are questioning the effectiveness of Russia's justice system in addressing and preventing such sensitive medical-conditions cases in the future.
