County hall's prominent display - local administration acknowledges compassionate family members
In the heart of Germany, Herford County is taking significant steps to support caregivers and those who are care-dependent. As the nation prepares to celebrate the annual Day of Caregivers on September 8, the county administration is making a concerted effort to recognise and assist these unsung heroes.
Britta Holtmann, from the care planning department, is a key contact person for those who need support in caring for a relative. Holtmann, who was previously active in mobile care counseling, understands the challenges that come with caring for a loved one. She emphasises that those who are care-dependent and their relatives are in need of help, and she is happy to answer questions from those who are caring for a relative at home. Holtmann can be reached at 05221 13-1405 or via email at b.holtmann@our website.
Relatives in the Herford district can also seek help from the mobile care counseling services of Herford County (05221 13-18486 / 05221 13-18485) and the city of Herford (05221 189 464). The care support points of the health insurance companies AWO, IKK, and BKK HMR also offer advice.
County Commissioner Jürgen Müller emphasises that the dedication of caregivers is invaluable but receives little recognition in public perception. He states that the county administration's care guides are contact persons for colleagues who care for relatives and need support.
The county has been a member of the state program 'Compatibility of Work and Care' since this year. This programme offers workshops and further training sessions for employees throughout the year. The county administration also organises a quarterly online exchange for caregivers to exchange experiences and offer mutual support.
Over 80% of care-dependent individuals in Germany are cared for at home. To highlight the efforts of caregivers, a three-meter long banner will be displayed in front of the Herford County Office for a week from September 8, 2025.
In addition to the county administration, the Diakonie Herford organisation offers specialized support for people in need and their relatives in Herford. Together, these initiatives aim to put those who care for their care-dependent relatives at home in the spotlight and provide much-needed support.
