Construction progressing on Herford's Inpatient Hospice facility

In the heart of Herford, a significant milestone for hospice and palliative care is being achieved. The historic building at Unter den Linden 41, once a day clinic of the district hospitals, is being transformed into the first stationary hospice in the Herford district.

Deep construction work has already been completed, and the cellar walls have been concreted. The renovation of the exterior facade is currently underway, ensuring the preservation of the building's historical charm while meeting modern requirements.

The building's transformation is being overseen by Hospiz Herford gGmbH, a non-profit joint subsidiary of the Diakonisches Werk in the Vlotho church district and the Herford church district. Kerstin Hensel, managing director of the Diakonisches Werk, has visited the construction site and expressed her excitement about the project's progress.

By summer 2026, the hospice is expected to be operational. It will offer ten guest rooms, a barrier-free elevator, and common areas, all designed to create a bright, cozy, and homelike atmosphere, contrasting with a hospital setting.

The construction of the hospice is being financed by the 'Future in the Wittekindskreis' foundation, along with a subsidy from Sparkasse Herford. Donations can be made to the foundation with the reference 'Donation - Foundation Fund 'Hospice and Palliative Care in the Herford District'' or directly to the hospice at Sparkasse Herford.

It's important to note that the inpatient hospice is not intended to be a competitive offer to the outpatient hospice services and facilities. Instead, Hensel emphasizes the importance of a very close and trusting cooperation with outpatient services, in the interest of the people who need hospice care.

Hospiz Herford gGmbH has already established cooperations regarding general practitioner and emergency care for their guests. An extension, a flat-roof building with a roof terrace, guest rooms, and common areas, is also being built on the rear side of the existing building.

Although Hensel clarified that they are not actively seeking staff yet, they are receiving inquiries from interested parties - both experienced and less experienced. The head of house and the position of nursing service manager are already competently filled.

The establishment of this hospice is considered a significant milestone for hospice and palliative care in the district. The Herford district has set up a foundation fund within the 'Zukunft im Wittekindskreis' foundation in November 2023 to strengthen hospice and palliative care in the Herford district.

As the renovation work continues, the community eagerly awaits the opening of the hospice, providing much-needed care and support for those in need.
