In an effort to raise awareness and provide support for victims of sexual violence, the City of Gießen is introducing a new initiative. Starting in September, a bus with a poster about the 'Medical Immediate Assistance After Sexual Assault' project will be circulating the city. This project is part of a larger, ongoing initiative led by the Women's and Equal Opportunities Offices of the City of Gießen, and is supported by the Hessian Ministry of Labor, Integration, Youth & Social Affairs. Gießen is one of 14 model cities in Hesse participating in this project. The unique aspect of this project is that victims of sexual violence can anonymously have evidence secured within the framework of medical care, providing them with the opportunity to create some distance before potentially filing a complaint. The University Clinics of Gießen and Marburg, as well as the Forensic Institute at the Institute of Legal Medicine, are responsible for the medical care and evidence preservation after sexual violence. The evidence material is stored for a year, only when a complaint is filed are the evidence handed over to the police for investigation. The pharmacy at Ludwigsplatz cooperates with the medical team if needed, and the victims' pharmaceutical needs are also coordinated within this project. Psychological and social care is provided by the intervention center against domestic violence of SKF e.V., Pro Familia Gießen e.V., Gießen Help e.V., and Wildwasser. The project is part of the Frankfurt Women's Emergency Call e.V.'s initiative, and the medical care, evidence preservation, psychological and social care, and pharmaceutical needs are all coordinated within this project. It's important to note that the clothing, appearance, or behavior of the victim is not decisive in cases of sexual violence - the responsibility always lies with the perpetrator. The medical care within the project remains fundamentally confidential, with neither the hospital nor a counseling center able to file a complaint against the will of the affected person. In the action month of November, further actions within the program for the International Day against Violence will take place, aiming to raise awareness that sexual violence never comes from the victim. The City of Gießen is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all its residents.
