ChristianaCare to assume control of previously owned Crozer Health outpatient facilities
ChristianaCare, a health system based in Wilmington, has successfully bid $50.3 million to obtain five outpatient locations from bankrupt Prospect Medical Holdings, the parent company of Crozer Health. The acquisition aims to address the significant healthcare needs in the suburbs of Philadelphia, particularly in Delaware County, following the abrupt closure of Crozer Health.
In a statement, ChristianaCare President and CEO Dr. Janice Nevin expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, "We are glad that ChristianaCare is able to take on these outpatient centers and provide stability and continuity of access to care for patients." The acquired facilities include locations in Glen Mills, Havertown, Broomall, and Media.
The closure of Crozer Health, Delaware County's largest health system, has created a substantial gap in care for the region. Prior to its closure, Crozer operated the county's only primary trauma center, burn unit, and served as the region's main EMS provider. The acquisition by ChristianaCare, while not covering the entire system, will provide a critical boost to meet the county's healthcare needs.
In addition to the acquisition, ChristianaCare plans to expand access to high-quality care in southeastern Pennsylvania. This includes the opening of a neighborhood hospital in West Grove, PA, in Summer 2025, and another in Aston in 2026. The company is also exploring options for an additional Delaware County neighborhood hospital location.
The bid by ChristianaCare is subject to court approval. Meanwhile, Delaware County continues to coordinate with healthcare providers to minimize disruptions in services and ensure seamless transition for patients. Additionally, the county has secured funding for additional Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicles to support emergency services.
In response to this development, Jennifer Schwartz, chief strategy and legal officer at ChristianaCare, emphasized the company's commitment to providing high-quality care in the region, stating, "We continue to expand access to high-quality care in southeastern Pennsylvania."
