British Mother Drowns Daughter in Psychotic Episode

In a tragic incident that shook the small town of Kingsley, Hampshire, a British woman, Alice Mackey, drowned her two-year-old daughter, Annabel, in a nearby lagoon during a psychotic episode. The incident, which occurred in September 2023, has left the community reeling with grief and shock.

Alice, a mother suffering from severe postpartum depression, believed she was protecting her daughter from non-existent suffering, a common delusion in mothers with severe mental illnesses. In a state of psychosis caused by the interruption of her medication, she held Annabel underwater until she stopped struggling. The lagoon was approximately 300 meters from their home.

Psychiatric experts confirmed Alice's severe mental state at the time of the incident. She was diagnosed with postpartum depression soon after Annabel's birth and was hospitalized in 2022. However, she stopped taking her medication in early 2023, leading to a deterioration in her mental health.

Annabel was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Life support was withdrawn the following day. The little girl is remembered as 'a ray of sunshine who brought love and light to all who knew her'. Her father, Peter Mackey, described her death as 'devastating'.

Alice Mackey was sentenced to four years in prison for manslaughter, with the sentence reduced due to her severe mental illness at the time of the incident. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support, particularly for new mothers. The local community continues to mourn the loss of Annabel, a child taken too soon.
