Billy Joel continues to grapple with this issue over a span of approximately 10 years, aligning with his diagnosis of Non-Pancreatic Hormone (NPH) condition.

American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, aged 76, has revealed his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological disorder that affects hearing, vision, and balance.

On May 23, Joel shared the news on his Instagram account, citing that recent performances had exacerbated his condition. He is currently undergoing physical therapy to treat the disorder and has taken a break from performing.

NPH occurs due to the accumulation of excess fluid in the brain's ventricles, resulting in pressure on the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include an inability to control the bladder, cognitive function issues, walking problems, and memory loss. These symptoms can be responsive to reduced pressure and fluid buildup, often improving after successful treatment.

In addition to this, the recovery process for NPH patients typically involves diagnosis through brain imaging and sometimes a lumbar puncture to assess symptom improvement after fluid removal. Treatment often involves surgical insertion of a shunt to drain excess fluid or endoscopic third ventriculostomy to improve fluid flow.

Post-surgery, patients may experience initial improvement in symptoms, but ongoing monitoring is necessary to ensure proper shunt function. Complications like blockages or infections can arise, requiring regular monitoring. The degree of recovery varies among individuals, influenced by factors such as the duration of untreated symptoms and the effectiveness of treatment.

It is important to note that early intervention and proper management are essential for maximizing recovery and minimizing long-term effects. Improvements in memory, concentration, balance, and walking are common after successful treatment, although the extent of recovery depends on the individual's response to treatment.

Joel's spokesperson stated that the condition had been exacerbated by recent concert performances, and he was under doctor's instructions to refrain from performing during the recovery period. The long-term effects on Joel's hearing, vision, and balance will depend on his response to treatment.

Science plays a crucial role in the treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that affects not only physical health but also mental health, as it can impact cognitive function. Billy Joel, currently undergoing physical therapy for NPH, might also benefit from other therapies and treatments focused on mental health, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or occupational therapy, to aid in his recovery.

In the pursuit of a comprehensive treatment plan, health-and-wellness approaches like mindfulness practices, balanced nutrition, and regular exercise can support Joel's overall health and help manage symptoms of NPH, hastening his recovery and reducing the risk of complications.
