Author International Discourse: Examination of Massive, Unruly Waves and the Surfers Drawn to Them
In a captivating event, author Susan Casey will be delivering a lecture on the destructive powers of waves and the science behind them at Birch Aquarium, located at 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, Calif. The event, organised by an unspecified organisation, is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6:30-8 p.m. 1
Casey, renowned for her ocean-themed works, is the author of the nonfiction bestseller "THE WAVE." In this book, she delves into the world of gigantic ocean waves, a topic that has fascinated both scientists and adventurers. Her narrative weaves together the natural history, the human fascination, and the challenges posed by these ocean giants 12
During the lecture, Casey will share stories from her journey following extreme surfer Laird Hamilton and his crew as they chased after gargantuan waves. The presentation will also cover the life and death stakes of surfing mammoth waves, as well as the scientists' urgent efforts to understand these destructive powers, including the 2004 Pacific tsunami and the 1,740-foot-wave that leveled part of the Alaskan coast 12
Following the presentation, a booksigning will take place, with books available for purchase or pre-purchase at the aquarium's Gift Shop.
