Armed Confrontation Erupts in Danville with Swimming Suspect Brandishing Firearm
Armed Standoff in Danville Ends Peacefully
In an unusual incident that unfolded early Monday morning, a 52- to 53-year-old man named Timothy Bancroft was involved in an armed standoff with police in Danville, California.
The incident began on the 1900 block of Saint Norbert Drive when police responded to reports that Bancroft was refusing to surrender his gun, despite attempts by a friend and police to negotiate. It was reported that Bancroft was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with a pistol.
During the standoff, Bancroft fired multiple shots, including at least one allegedly toward police officers. In a bizarre turn of events, he removed all his clothing and took a swim in his backyard pool while still holding the pistol. After swimming, he got dressed again and continued the standoff. Fortunately, the incident ended peacefully without anyone getting injured.
Police found additional weapons and ammunition at the residence. Bancroft was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. Bail was set at $100,000 to $200,000 in different reports. The incident involved a police SWAT team, hostage negotiators, and community shelter-in-place alerts to nearby residents.
