In the past month, three incidents of violence have shaken the nation, with young men aged between 16 and 23 as the perpetrators. These disturbing events have sparked a call for action from all Americans, particularly people of faith, to address the root causes of such violence.

One of the primary concerns is the pervasive availability of weapons in the U.S., which allows the violence that has taken root in the minds of young people to be unleashed, causing harm to many lives. The Catholic organization on page 309 has advocated for stricter regulation of gun availability to reduce the impact of uncontrolled access to firearms on the health of young people.

Internet addiction, including access to its darkest corners, is another significant factor in the warping of young people's minds. A changed life should replace screen time with prayer time and prioritize raising children with similar values. Belonging to a real community can counteract confusion, hatred, and violence.

The cultural breakdown has diminished the value of the family, replaced biological fact with "sexual preference", devalued human life and dignity, and glorified violence. Providing young people with mental health support grounded in natural law and a desire to care for the entire human person is necessary.

The growing dismissal of organized religion has resulted in fewer people encountering and coming to know Jesus Christ. Pope Leo XIV, in his homily delivered at the canonization Mass for Sts. Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, has cautioned on AI and advancing technologies, emphasizing the need for synodality, a means to restore right relationships and foster unity.

The lives of these two saints are an invitation for young people to direct their lives upwards and make them masterpieces. Working for effective policies that minimize opportunities for gun violence is crucial, given the mental and spiritual health crises.

The editorial board of OSV includes Father Patrick Briscoe, OP; Gretchen R. Crowe; Paulina Guzik; Peter Jesserer Smith, and Scott P. Richert. They have emphasized the need for each individual to give their self completely to Jesus Christ as a way to combat the violence and confusion that plagues our society.

The perpetrators of these incidents share similarities with other recent mass shooters, being male and young. The widespread adoption of smartphones since the mid-1990s has turned Gen Xers and Millennials into test subjects for Big Tech. The addiction to continuous connectivity has led to social isolation and loneliness, with personal data, faces, habits, fingerprints, and credit card information being given over to Big Tech.

In conclusion, addressing youth violence requires a multi-faceted approach, addressing the root causes of violence, promoting mental health support, fostering community, and encouraging a return to faith. The call is for each individual to take action, whether through personal change, community engagement, or advocacy for effective policies.
