Alleged questionable interactions with children in the western sector of Leipzig uncovered
In the past week, Leipzig has seen a flurry of activity as police investigate reports of suspicious behaviour near a primary school in the western district. However, both reports have been found to be misunderstandings or false alarms.
The police are warning that a man widely spread on social media and currently accused by authorities of not having committed a crime is not a suspect in any confirmed crime. The man, a 29-year-old linked to a TikTok account under investigation for alleged terrorist threats, has not been definitively convicted yet.
The circulation of warning notices without concrete evidence may cause unnecessary panic and confusion. The police are urging the public to be cautious and only share verified information.
In light of the situation, the police have provided tips on how to protect children. Parents are encouraged to discuss with their children where they can seek help if needed (so-called "safe havens", such as shops or mothers with children). Children should also know where they can spontaneously seek help if needed (e.g. if they are scared or lost).
Children should know how to independently answer phone calls and what information they can provide. They should inform parents of their whereabouts (e.g. by phone, note, prior arrangement) and travel home on designated routes. It is also important for children to know who can let individuals in when they are home alone.
Parents should also discuss with their children with whom they can travel home. Children should not travel home with individuals without prior arrangement, except for grandparents or the parents of a friend.
The police investigation found no evidence to support the initial reports of suspicious behaviour or a missing girl. Children reported seeing a girl being led away by a man near the school, but this has been determined to be a misunderstanding.
The police are reminding the public that the safety of children is their top priority. They are continuing to monitor the situation and will take action if any further evidence of suspicious behaviour is found.
In the meantime, parents and children are encouraged to follow these safety guidelines to ensure their safety and peace of mind.
