Known for his austere lifestyle and unparalleled contributions to yoga and spirituality, Baba Sivanand, the 128-year-old Padma Shri awardee, recently passed away in Varanasi due to health complications.
This spiritual master had been admitted to BHU Hospital on April 30 due to some health issues and breathed his last on Saturday night. His body is currently being kept at his residence in Kabirnagar Colony for the public to pay their final respects. The last rites will be performed later this evening, as per his disciples.
Born in the Sylhet district of present-day Bangladesh in 1896, Baba Sivanand was scarcely six years old when he lost his parents to starvation. Since then, he led a life of austerity and discipline, consuming only half a stomach of food. After his parents' demise, he was taken under the care of Omkarnand, who became his guardian and mentor. Baba Sivanand received spiritual education and life teachings under his guidance.
Being a beacon of yoga and spirituality, Baba Sivanand's Padma Shri was awarded in 2022. His disciples attribute his longevity and vigor to his disciplined lifestyle. They claim that he woke up at 3 am daily for rigorous yoga practice and managed all his duties independently. His diet comprised only boiled food, he slept on a mat, and chiefly practiced a simplistic, ascetic lifestyle.
Following his death, Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, offered his condolences, paying tribute to the yoga guru and expressing his hope for his salvation. He expressed sadness over the passing of the celebrated yoga guru who had made exceptional contributions in the field of yoga. He also prayed for the departed soul's strength to bear this immense grief.
